Debut album ‘Hello, Phantom’ released via Venn Records – https://GoldKey.lnk.to/HelloPhantom
In the Summer of 2016, Laurent Barnard and Steve Sears decided it was time they made a record together. Not only were the two school friends but in the last few years Steve had
produced two albums for Laurent’s punk band, Gallows. Soon, local drummer Jack Kenny (Nervus / Blackhole) joined the freshly named Gold Key project, and by the autumn James
Leach of heavy prog legends Sikth completed the line-up.
Without a label or PR team, publications like Metal Hammer, Rock Sound and Upset began promoting Gold Key online while the first two singles gained heavy rotation on Radio 1, Kerrang
Radio and Absolute Radio. In the early months of 2017 the Watford four-piece had already completed work on their debut album, Hello, Phantom. Given their musical background it was a
chance for the members to branch out from their recognised fields. “I’ve never wanted to be a stagnant musician”, explains singer Steve Sears, “We’re constantly trying to push ourselves out of the
comfort zone, whether that’s through learning to play the mandolin or using furniture for Percussion”.
“Tense, dark, claustrophobic and unnerving, Hello Phantom is informed by Radiohead’s twitchy paranoia, the menacing thrum of Rated R-era QOTSA and Pink Floyd’s nuanced dynamics, and sounds like the work of an established arena act… A truly masterful debut. ( 4/5 )” – Planet Rock Magazine
As soon as you think you’ve got them figured out, the mood shifts from post-rock introspection to indie-disco… there is a propulsive chemistry in play that fills the room with their intriguing cool. ( KKKK )” – Kerrang! Magazine
“Channelling moments of Queens Of The Stone Age, Pink Floyd and Muse in their creeping, unsettling alt.rock” – Team Rock
